Landscapes change. Trees grow and create new areas of shade. Plants mature, spread, or decline. Maintenance practices change. New plants are added and others disappear. Over time, even a well-designed landscape may no longer look or function as intended.

 

I help clients in Salem, the Willamette Valley, and throughout the Pacific Northwest take a fresh look at established landscapes and decide what should come next. The objective is rarely to start over. It is to understand what is working, what is not, and what has changed—and then develop a practical strategy for renewing the landscape while retaining what continues to have value.

Working With the Landscape You Have

 

Mature trees, successful plant communities, distinctive specimens, and other established features can be some of a property's greatest assets. Renewal begins by understanding those assets and the conditions that have developed around them.

I look at the landscape as a whole: its design and visual character, the health and suitability of its plants, changing site conditions, ecological value, and the practical realities of caring for it. From there, I can identify what should be retained, removed, replaced, or added and develop priorities that can be implemented immediately or over time.

 

The goal is a landscape that once again feels intentional, functions well, reflects the client's priorities, and can continue to develop successfully.

Landscape Care Plans

 

For properties maintained by staff or contractors, I can prepare landscape care plans that provide clear guidance for the long-term care of trees, shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, and significant plant collections.

 

A care plan can establish priorities, identify appropriate horticultural practices, and help clients communicate their expectations to the people responsible for carrying out the work. Where useful, I can also train staff in implementing the plan.
